GMC Sierra EV: a premium electric truck that offers real capability

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV comes in three clear trims: Elevation, AT4 and Denali. Then, you can choose among three electric ranges, either standard, extended or maximum.

It is a trim strategy that makes it easy to configure for your specific needs. You choose your level of luxury, your type of use and your range, without getting lost in a lineup that is too broad. In short, you will get much more than simply the truck with the best fuel economy.

Powertrain:

  • 2 electric motors (1 front and 1 rear)
  • Standard-range battery pack: up to 605 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque
  • Extended-range battery pack:
     - Elevation: 645 horsepower, 765 lb-ft of torque
     - AT4: 625 horsepower, 775 lb-ft of torque
     - Denali: 645 horsepower, 785 lb-ft of torque
  • Maximum-range battery pack:
     - AT4: 725 horsepower, 775 lb-ft of torque
     - Denali: 760 horsepower, 785 lb-ft of torque

Range can reach 769 km and towing up to 5,670 kg (12,500 lb.), depending on the trim you choose.

The AT4 trim is worth a look if you are looking for the best off-road truck. It is perfect if you want mixed on-road and off-road use. The Denali is clearly for you if you want it all, meaning capability, comfort and luxury, with no compromise.

PRO ADVICE

“The Elevation trim already gives you all the useful day-to-day essentials. You have a truck that can truly tow with all the advantages of electric, without needing to move up the lineup.

Add to that items such as 24-inch wheels, an Air Ride suspension, the 10.2 kW Energy Transfer Pro off-boarding power, the panoramic glass roof and four-wheel steering with crab walk, and you end up with a truck that gives you all the muscle you want while also providing divine comfort.”

Chevrolet Silverado EV: the most rational lineup for comparing uses

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV is extremely well structured. It also gives you three main trims, WT, LT and Trail Boss, with standard, extended or maximum battery packs depending on the trim. In other words, it runs from a pure work truck to a more adventurous electric pickup. It does all this at a very compelling entry price.

The WT is probably the easiest to justify if you are a contractor or run a business and want to go electric to maximize capability and minimize your fuel costs.

The LT is the trim for you if you don’t want to compromise day to day. It adds a more refined look and offers the Multi-Flex tailgate along with the Multi-Flex Midgate as an option.

PRO ADVICE

“In short, with the WT, which lives up to its name (WT = Work Truck), you have a hard-working truck that is practical and powerful, with no frills. It also lets you power your tools on a jobsite without the need for a generator.”

‒ Alexandre Rivest, sales consultant

The new Trail Boss brings the off-road flavour that was missing if you wanted an electric truck for your weekends off the beaten path. It gives you a 2-inch lift, 35-inch all-terrain tires, four-wheel steering and Sidewinder diagonal steering as standard, among other features.

In short, with the Silverado EV you get up to 793 km of range, up to 12,500 lb. of towing and up to 725 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque in Wide Open Watts.

If going electric makes you nervous, you will be glad to know you can recover up to 199 km in about 10 minutes on a DC fast charger with both GM trucks. That is the kind of detail that can reassure you if this is your first EV.

PRO ADVICE

“It is true that switching to electric can require some adjustments. But if you know your needs well and you are well organized, you benefit from a lot of muscle along with advantages you can’t get in a gas truck.

Come talk it through with us. We’ll be straight with you and explain what to expect from a zero-emission truck.”

Rivian R1T: a very appealing adventure electric truck

The Rivian R1T deserves its place in any comparison of best electric trucks, especially if you want a model that is highly adventure-oriented. It is a fully electric truck designed for performance, getaways and the outdoors. Its positioning is clear: strong lifestyle focus, distinctive look, modern tech and a very strong brand image among those who want to stand out.

That said, when you compare it with a Silverado EV or Sierra EV, GM trucks often keep a more concrete advantage for broader use. They offer greater practicality for work, more maximum towing, more range, a full-size truck approach and a more natural fit for a buyer who wants to haul, tow and use their truck every day.

RAM REV / Ramcharger coming soon: stay tuned

With this model, RAM is doing everything, except being very clear. Even the current official data is contradictory.

At first, there were two trucks: the Ramcharger REx and the RAM REV. The Ramcharger REx was named for its architecture that combined a battery with an onboard generator powered by a 3.6L V6, hence REx for “Range Extender”. The RAM REV, on the other hand, was to be 100% electric.

But according to the latest official updates, the 100% electric truck would have been shelved and the Ramcharger REx would have been renamed RAM REV. If you find that hard to follow, don’t worry. So do we!

So, based on the most recent official corporate communication available, the upcoming model should not be considered a 100% electric truck in the classic sense if it maintains this architecture. In short, it runs on electricity, but it is not strictly a pure EV if the V6 serves as a generator. More official details on this truck will be available soon.

Meanwhile, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV have a simple advantage. Their offer is already clear, confident and 100% electric.

Toyota Tacoma hybrid and Ford F-150 hybrid: useful, but not 100% electric

We will touch briefly on the Toyota Tacoma hybrid and the Ford F-150 hybrid PowerBoost since, in both cases, these are popular electrified trucks. However, it is important to be clear: they are not 100% electric trucks. They are non-plug-in hybrids, so you will not have access to an electric-only range. These powertrains aim primarily to reduce your fuel consumption. And that is still nuanced, since the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offer better consumption with the diesel engine.

So, if you are looking for an electric truck, you will be well served with a Sierra EV or a Silverado EV.

And the GMC Hummer EV in all this?

The GMC Hummer EV deserves to be in the conversation, but in a slightly different register. It is an extremely impressive truck. Up to 1,160 horsepower on some configurations, up to 584 km of range, features such as crab walk, Extract Mode, up to 18 camera views and a spectacular presence everywhere you go. It clearly does not go unnoticed.

On the other hand, it is an adventure-ready truck, more focused on image and more super-truck than a rational electric truck for most buyers. That is also what makes it impressive.

If you want something extreme, very capable off-road and frankly unique, it checks many boxes. But for simpler, more everyday or more work-oriented use, the Silverado EV and Sierra EV generally remain easier to justify.

Other electric trucks often mentioned

The Ford F-150 Lightning remains an important name in Canada, especially because it is well known, but it is important to note that it has been discontinued. And in any case, from the start, its towing capacity is 2,500 lb. below the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, and its range is also much less generous (about 200 km less). That already limited range is even more limiting if you plan to tow often.

Clearly, that means if your number one criterion is to pull heavy and go far, GMC and Chevrolet trucks are much more tailored to your needs.
